Canadian asbestos walk participation growing
An asbestos walk in Sarnia, Ontario, that is scheduled for October 1 is growing in participation, as a Halifax woman who recently lost her father to malignant mesothelioma has reportedly booked her plane ticket to join the event.According to the Sarnia Observer, geography and environmental studies professor Cathy Conrad is one of a number of people who plans to travel to Sarnia to partake in the walk in memory of asbestos victims.
The walk, which is organized by sisters Stacy Cattran and Leah Nielsen in memory of their father, will reportedly be preceded by a candlelight vigil. Conrad told the Observer that she is looking forward to the event, where she will be joined by a number of "family" members.
"I'm sure it's going to be very, very emotional because I feel like I've got an extended family I'm going to be meeting for the first time," Conrad said. "I'm so thankful there are so many people in southwestern Ontario working so hard on this."
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis. All told, such diseases kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
