Canadian asbestos victim group provides support, information
A Canadian asbestos victims group recently met to provide members with information about asbestos-related diseases like malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. The Canadian Society for Asbestos Victims (CanSAV) met in Parksville, British Columbia, to not only inform people about the horrible consequences of exposure to the naturally occurring substance but to also support sufferers and their families, reports the Parksville Qualicum Beach News.
CanSAV founder Bob Katzko, whose father died of an asbestos-related diseases (ARD), said that the group provides an important service.
"Having lost my father to mesothelioma in 2004 and my personal experience since then, I know that many people impacted by ARDs need help in understanding the special services available to them," he said.
Many people were exposed to asbestos on the job as the material was once widely used as a flame retardant and insulator. However by the mid-1960s it was proven that exposure to asbestos could cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
WorkSafe BC, the province's workplace safety organization, estimates that such diseases will kill 1,500 people in British Columbia over the next five years.
