Canadian Red Cross to review status of board member linked to asbestos industry
The Canadian Red Cross is reportedly reviewing the status of one of its board members who has connections with the asbestos industry.Roshi Chadha is an executive at Seja Trade Ltd., a subsidiary of Balcorp Ltd., which is attempting to revive the Jeffrey asbestos mine in Quebec, reports Postmedia News. In addition Chadha is the wife of the president of Balcorp, Baljit Singh Chadha, who has been tirelessly campaigning to revive Canada's asbestos industry.
The Red Cross will reportedly review Roshi Chadha's status during its January meeting.
"We're going to consider the concerns raised and it's a matter for the board. I'm not going to presuppose what the board's going to do," Christopher Hilton, the spokesman for the Canadian Red Cross, told the news source.
The asbestos debate has been raging in Canada for months, with Conservative politicians and industry advocates claiming that chrysotile, or white, asbestos can be used safely. However, asbestos opponents and the global scientific and medical community have rightly pointed out that there is no such thing as safe asbestos and exposure to the naturally occurring substance can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
