Asbestos News

Canada asbestos industry criticized in the press
Canada has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, as Vancouver Canucks fans recently tarnished the reputation of the British Columbia city after the team's Stanley Cup finals loss.

In addition however, there has been plenty of negative press towards the Canadian asbestos industry, with many notable publications calling out the contradiction of the country exporting the carcinogenic substance to developing countries while regulating its use at home.

Recently, in a St. John's Telegram editorial, the asbestos issue in Quebec over the Jeffrey Mine was compared to previous asbestos operations in Newfoundland, which created a number of serious health issues and cleanup conundrums.

While this operation was content with mining asbestos and exporting it to other countries, it refused to accept asbestos (some of which it may have initially exported itself) from an American company.

Thus, the article calls on Canadian officials to consider why asbestos is not safe to be used in the country, but can be exported to other developing countries, many of which have no choice but to utilize the carcinogenic material, which has been proven to cause asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma.
