Mesothelioma Treatment

CT scans could help detect lung cancer in early stages
CT scans could help detect lung cancer in early stages
Asbestos exposure has been linked to a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's inner organs.

In addition, however, exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause lung cancer, which kills more people each year than any other form of the disease.

According to the recently released National Lung Cancer Screening Trial, which was conducted by the National Cancer Institute, the death rate for people at the highest risk for lung cancer could drop 20 percent with regular tests and CT scans, which show 3D images of the body.

The reason for this decline in mortality rate was likely due to the fact that CT scans can help to detect cancerous tumors when they are in their early stages, the study said.

Asbestos-related illnesses such as lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, estimates the World Health Organization.
