Budget for Northern Israel asbestos removal project doubled
Budget for Northern Israel asbestos removal project doubled
Israel Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan recently took a tour of sites in the northern part of the country that are having asbestos removed and opted to double the funding for the projects to cut down on the time expected to complete the work.

According to a release from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Erdan cited the importance of the project for public health reasons and decided to increase the overall budget from 20 million shekels to 40 million per year. As a result, the cleanup projects are now expected to be completed in 2014.

"Every day in which we advance the project will save human lives and therefore we doubled the budget allocated to this project this year in order to double the implementation rate of removing this hazard," Erdan noted. "This is a life-saving project, which is implemented according to the highest professional standards worldwide."

The Minister's statement is supported by decades of evidence that exposure to asbestos can cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

The release notes that since the projects began in April 2011, approximately 14,000 cubic meters of asbestos waste has been removed from 36 sites.
