British Columbia man angered by nearby demolition of asbestos-tainted homes
A resident of the Canadian province of British Columbia is upset that an asbestos-containing structure was demolished near his home without warning.Randy Tkach told The Province that the demolition of the nearby house woke him up one morning in November and he saw dust going everywhere.
"It was just a guy with a machine, ripping a house apart," he said. "I immediately thought of a lot of things, particularly asbestos."
Tkach was right to be worried as there is no such thing as too much caution when it comes to asbestos. The demolition of structures that contain the naturally occurring substance needs to be tightly controlled as the inhalation of dust caused by such work can cause a number of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
Tkach told the news source that he contacted WorkSafe B.C. about the work. When officials came to the scene they took samples, one of which tested positive for asbestos.
"The site's going to remain closed until the safety issue is addressed," WorkSafe B.C. spokeswoman Megan Johnston told the news provider.
