Bags of asbestos dumped near Welsh pond
More than 50 bags of asbestos were recently dumped near a fish pond in Caerphilly County, Wales, with cleanup expected to be extremely costly, reports the BBC.According to the news source, Environment Agency Wales has begun an investigation after a citizen reported the discovery to the Caerphilly Council.
While the agency said the specific asbestos materials did not pose an immediate risk to local residents - as some of the material was bagged properly - exposure to the carcinogenic substance can have a number of serious consequences. Such consequences can include the development of deadly diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma.
The BBC reports that cleaning up the dumped asbestos is expected to cost thousands of pounds.
"Material like this must be disposed of properly because it has the potential to harm the environment and human health," a spokesperson for Environment Agency Wales told the news source. "However, it does cost money to dispose of properly, which is probably the reason behind this crime."
The spokesperson added that the decision to dump the dangerous material was "irresponsible," according to the news source.
