Australian school gets asbestos clearance
Australia's New South Wales Education Department has reportedly given the all-clear to the Gol Gol Primary School near Mildura after parents had been initially concerned that their children might have been exposed to asbestos particles.According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, parents became concerned for the safety of their children after renovation work began on the school approximately two weeks ago.
The news source reports that initial testing demonstrated that there were not unsafe levels of asbestos located in the school, but continued pressure from parents caused a second wave of testing to be conducted.
After this second round, a spokesman said that there were no asbestos particles discovered in the air, and the school was cleared, according to the news provider.
Asbestos exposure can have serious consequences for children in particular, as the symptoms of asbestos-related illnesses like asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma typically do not manifest themselves until decades after initial exposure. All told, asbestos-related diseases kill approximately 107,000 people around the world annually, according to the World Health Organization.
