Australian residents concerned over potential asbestos-containing box left behind by workers
According to the Fraser Coast Chronicle, workers at Australian telecommunications company Telstra reportedly left a broken asbestos-containing junction box in the driveway of a local resident for six weeks.Mike Adamson reportedly discovered the box near his garden and called Telstra because he was concerned that it may have been made of asbestos.
Adamson told the news source that a technician came to the site, wrapped the box in a protective sheet and left.
Then, after calling the company 10 or 12 times, Adamson was told that the box had been taken away, but he found that it was still located in the driveway and had not actually been removed, according to the news provider.
Exposure to asbestos can have serious consequences including the development of a number of deadly diseases such as lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world each year succumb to asbestos-related illnesses.
