Mesothelioma Treatment

Australian researchers make mesothelioma treatment breakthrough
A new tumor marker for mesothelioma, an asbestos-related disease, has been discovered after research was conducted by the Asbestos Disease and Research Institute (ADRI) in Australia, according to the institute's website.

As the rate of growth of the disease's tumor cells can vary among patients, the new discovery is important because it shows markers that can indicate how aggressive the disease really is in specific patients, the website said.

"This is a significant research outcome in that some of these markers have become very important in the treatment of malignant diseases such as asbestos-related mesothelioma by assisting clinicians in guiding specific treatment for each person diagnosed with the disease," said professor Nico van Zandwijk, director of the ADRI.

According to the website, Australia has the highest incidence of malignant mesothelioma per capita in the world, with more than 700 new cases of the deadly disease diagnosed each year. It is estimated that cases of the disease will continue to increase in Australia for the next 10 to 20 years, according to the ADRI.
