Australian police stations to undergo asbestos abatement work
Contractors are being brought in to deal with the asbestos issues that are currently plaguing a large number of police stations in the Australian state of New South Wales.

According to a report released earlier this year, more than 300 police facilities in the western portion of the state have asbestos problems that need to be dealt with.

Superintendent Darryl Tuck told the news source that this asbestos work will be handled in a more timely manner than it was in previous instances.

"We're going to multiple contractors this time, a different strategy, to try to compress that revaluation phase down to the rest of this financial year, which is about eight months," he said.

Despite the accelerated process, the Police Association of NSW said it is not happy that it is taking so long to get the asbestos work completed.

"Somebody needs to be held to account for this. We also need to see immediate action, not just placards put on the front of people's premises," western region union spokesman Robert Dunn told the news provider. "Something needs to be done as a matter of urgency.

Urgent action is needed when it comes to asbestos as exposure to the naturally occurring substance can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
