Australian hospital demolition held up by asbestos discovery
The demolition of a former hospital building in Burnbury, Australia, has reportedly been delayed following the discovery of asbestos in the structure, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The news source reports that the former St. John of God Hospital building has been called an eyesore and public danger that has sat vacant for more than 12 years. Developers are planning to construct new apartment towers after the demolition process reportedly began in September.

The project was expected to be completed by the end of the year, but the asbestos find will reportedly push that date back. Now, officials are anticipating that the demolition will be completed by the end of January, according to the news provider.

Removing asbestos from structures set to be demolished is critical, as the dangerous mineral fibers can become airborne when loosened during such work. Consequentially, the inhalation of these fibers can lead to the development of lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.
