Australian homeowners concerned about possible asbestos exposure
Two Australian homeowners have expressed concern that they may have been exposed to asbestos, as a nearby house that reportedly contained the material is currently being demolished.According to the Coff's Coast Advocate, Emerald Beach residents Tony and Claire Rodriguez say their windows were open while the contractor removed asbestos sheeting from the house earlier this week.
Tony Rodriguez told the news source that he was not aware that asbestos abatement was taking place until he saw signs around the property warning that the carcinogenic material was indeed present.
"They told me the demolition of the house was going to happen, but they never said anything about asbestos," Rodriguez explained to the news source. "I came home and the windows were open... it was a windy day and there was dust in the house."
The Rodriguez' fears are not unfounded as the inhalation of asbestos fibers has been proven to cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.
