Australian demolition company accused of illegally dumping asbestos
The former director of an Australian demolition company could face a cleanup bill of nearly $2 million after he and a former business partner allegedly dumped a significant amount of asbestos illegally. The Geelong Advertiser reports that John Tsorotes and Casey McCormack were partners at Geelong Demolitions, which is accused of dumping tons of asbestos-containing waste between 2007 and 2009.
The news source reports that the 28-year-old Tsorotes pleaded guilty to charges of allowing the deposit of industrial waste that contained asbestos and permitting the disposal of waste materials through burning.
An EPA prosecutor told Geelong Magistrates' Court that in mid-2007, the owners of the alleged dumping site became concerned about the waste piling up on their property and asked McCormack to get rid of it.
"By December 2008, nothing had been done and their concern grew when they noticed asbestos being dumped," the prosecutor added.
It is important that asbestos is handled with care and disposed of properly as exposure to the carcinogenic material can cause asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
