Asbestos News

Australian couple fears asbestos exposure from abandoned home
A couple from Maroochydore, Australia, is reportedly concerned that they have been exposed to asbestos from a nearby cottage that was gutted by fire in late June, reports the Sunshine Coast Daily.

According to the news source, Jack McKenzie and his partner have contacted a number of government departments in order to have something done to the neglected structure, but nothing has happened.

McKenzie explained that he first became concerned when it was apparent that asbestos fibers from the cottage's damaged roof could be blowing around the neighborhood following the fire.

Leonard Lee, an asbestos expert, told the news source that the McKenzie's fears may be well-founded.

"If it's a burnt-out home and you've got a lot of asbestos in it, you've got a reason to be worried," Lee stated.

The news source reportedly contacted a number of government agencies as well, but could not clarify which department had jurisdiction over the matter.

Ensuring that asbestos is properly contained is critical as the inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can cause lung cancer, asbestosis and the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma.
