Asbestos News

Australian bathing facility cleared of asbestos risk
A bathing facility in the Melbourne, Australia area was recently tested for asbestos and cleared by inspectors.

The Brunswick City Baths were evacuated after a ceiling tile fell and broke, Moreland Council leisure manager Tony Oulton told the Moreland Leader. However, subsequent testing of the debris revealed that it did not contain asbestos.

"The center was closed as a precaution and on the basis that the asbestos register states this area may contain asbestos sheeting," Oulton told the news provider. "Specialist advice and testing has confirmed the site is safe to re-open."

It is important that precautions are taken with materials that potentially contain asbestos as exposure to the naturally occurring mineral can cause a number of serious illnesses such as lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer that attacks the thin membrane that lines the chest, abdomen and many of the body's internal organs.

Oulton said that the situation at the city baths would continue to be monitored.

"Investigations will continue into the integrity of the rest of the ceiling structure," he told the news provider.
