Australian angered over illegal asbestos dumping near creek
An Australian is upset after a truckload of asbestos-containing waste was found dumped on the banks of a creek near his home.

Ron McGeorge was not happy when he learned of the hazardous waste on the banks of the Kremnos Creek near Kangala, reports the Daily Examiner.

McGeorge - who says he believes the perpetrator of the dumping was familiar with the area - needs to be brought to justice due to the serious nature of the deed.

"The asbestos was dumped on the banks of the creek that floods quite regularly. It could have affected the whole river system," he told the news source. "There needs to be an investigation to find out where it came from and who is responsible."

Asbestos needs to be disposed of properly as the improper handling of the naturally occurring material can allow the deadly mineral fibers to become airborne. Inhaling these fibers has been known for decades to cause a number of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma.

Clarence Valley Council deputy general manager Des Schroder told the news source that local authorities spent more than $3,000 cleaning up the asbestos waste.
