Asbestos-containing Ottawa theater set to be torn down
The Astrolabe Theatre on Nepean Point in Ottawa, Canada, is set to be demolished, but not before asbestos and other hazardous substances are removed from the facility, reports the Ottawa Citizen.According to the news source, the theater, which is more than 30 years old, is no longer in compliance with industry standards in terms of capacity, equipment and other aspects.
The National Capital Commission (NCC), a Canadian Crown corporation that deals with federally owned buildings in the region, will be tearing down the theater, but has not yet said what will replace the facility.
The news provider reports that the first step in the demolition process involves the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials located under the theater in former dressing rooms.
"It's a dangerous place, full of asbestos," NCC spokeswoman Judith Gadbois-St.-Cyr told the news source. "This site needs to be remediated."
Asbestos must be dealt with and removed properly prior to demolition work as exposure to the carcinogenic material has been proven to cause lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer.
