Asbestos-containing Australian beach to be filled with concrete
A beach near the Macleay Island ferry terminal in Australia that contains asbestos is expected to be converted into a concrete parking lot if the Redland City Council receives government approval.According to the Bayside Bulletin, the council is currently submitting the application to the state government after asbestos-containing building waste was discovered at the site.
"Negotiations include discussion on the best method of managing the asbestos known to exist on the development site and within the adjacent tidal zone," Redland City CEO Gary Stevenson told the news source.
The council's plans call for the beach to be filled with concrete and turned into a parking lot for the ferry terminal. This would reportedly allow for an additional 186 parking spaces, the news source said.
It is important that asbestos is properly handled as exposure to the carcinogenic material can cause a number of fatal diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
The ferry terminal may also add a boat ramp, which would be for recreational purposes, according to the news provider.
