Asbestos survey to be conducted at fire-damaged facility in New York
A fire at an upstate New York town's vehicle storage facility may have disturbed asbestos, forcing a survey to be conducted, reports the Elmira Star-Gazette.The blaze at the town of Veteran, New York's complex was caused by an electrical malfunction, according to fire investigators.
It is estimated that the fire caused more than $1 million worth of damage and, in addition, may have disturbed asbestos.
"Because the building was built prior to 1974, there has to be a survey done for asbestos by a licensed inspector," Labor Department spokeswoman Karen Williamson told the news source. "Our inspectors noticed there was material disturbed by the cleanup. The town has to have a survey for asbestos done before any additional cleanup work."
Williamson said that the results of the survey will dictate what action is undertaken regarding the remediation of the facility.
"If the survey shows there is asbestos, it will have to be abated by a licensed professional," she told the news provider. "If it says there is no asbestos, they can go ahead and take care of the situation."
Asbestos exposure can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
