Asbestos removal project for Welsh hospital approved
A plan to remove asbestos from a hospital in Wales, which has had issues with the carcinogenic substance in the past, was recently approved.Welsh Health Minister Edwina Hart gave the go ahead to a £5.7 million plan to remove asbestos at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd hospital, according to the Western Mail.
The large project will necessitate some disruptions to hospital operations as six operating theaters will need to be closed down for a year so asbestos can be abated from their ceilings and nearby corridors.
Hart said that the work is essential for the hospital, which was built in the 1970s, when asbestos was widely used in the construction industry as an insulator and flame retardant.
"The work at Glan Clwyd will improve safety and bring a hospital designed more than 40 years ago up to 21st century standards," she told the news source. "The removal of asbestos will make way for a further program of refurbishment to modernize facilities."
Exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral, can cause lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and often fatal cancer.
