Asbestos removal increases cost of repairs in Indiana city
Asbestos removal at the City-Council Building in Fort Wayne, Indiana, will most likely increase the cost of renovating the new headquarters for the city and county police departments, the Journal Gazette reports.Recently, the Allen County commissioners approved a deal with ACM Engineering and Environmental Services to complete asbestos testing and monitor the building's construction, according to the news provider.
The agreement is expected to cost $17,800 plus an additional $560 per day for the monitoring.
Michael Dials, the vice president of operations at ACM, told the news source that he didn't know how much the asbestos abatement would add to the estimated $4 million renovation project, but said that the dangerous material had been discovered in the facility's floor tiles, wall panels and some insulation.
It is important that all asbestos be removed from the building prior to renovation work because inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can cause a number of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the majority of the body's internal organs.
