Asbestos removal from Welsh nursery to take months
The process to remove asbestos from a children's nursery housed in a Welsh college building will reportedly take "a period of months," according to a statement from a spokesman for the college. The Daily Post North Wales reports officials with the college say no one is at risk of being exposed to the carcinogenic substance, but a union has reportedly called for an assessment of all sites in the UK containing asbestos.
The spokesman for the college said tests for asbestos in the building had been inconclusive to this point.
"A report from specialist consultants showed that while the majority of the building is totally asbestos-free, some areas do contain some traces of asbestos," the spokesman said in the statement. "It should be noted that a previous report had shown that there were no traces of asbestos in the building."
He added that the college is currently working on a short-term plan to manage the asbestos while further air quality testing is conducted.
Using an abundance of caution when it comes to asbestos is critical as the inhalation of the dangerous mineral fibers can cause lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
