Asbestos removal doubles cost of UK park project
According to the Salisbury Journal, the costs incurred by the Ringwood, England Town Council for the creation of Danny Cracknell Pocket Park are expected to double due to the discovery and subsequent removal of asbestos. The news source reports that the cost for the council is likely to increase from £5,000 to £10,000 because of the asbestos.
"The rise in our costs are a result of the discovery of asbestos and its safe removal and additional costs from the contractor," said Terry Simpson, Ringwood's town clerk.
It is important that asbestos is properly handled and removed as exposure to the dangerous material can cause a number of deadly diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people die each year around the world as a result of asbestos-related illnesses.
In addition to the asbestos removal costs, it is estimated that another £700 is needed for fencing around one of the boardwalk's edges, the news source said. Investigations into the condition of the boardwalk are also underway, according to Councilor Gloria O'Reilly.
