Asbestos not removed from play area in Letchworth, England
Asbestos was recently found near a children’s play area in Letchworth Garden City, England, according to The Comet. Although the issue was reported to the North Herts District Council (NHDC) more than two weeks ago, the council has yet to remove the hazardous material, according to the news source.Diane Brandon, resident of Letchworth, found the asbestos while walking her dog and immediately reported the substance. She told The Comet that she was highly concerned that the NHDC has not acted yet. "It's been there for three weeks now and if children get hold of it then it could seriously damage their health in 30 to 40 years’ time," Brandon told the news agency. Brandon is very aware of the dangers of asbestos, as her husband is currently battling an asbestos-related disease, reports the media outlet.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to serious diseases that may not present symptoms until years later. Asbestos exposure can lead to mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
Councillor Peter Burt of the NHDC told The Comet that the delay in the removal of the material was due to the need to employ a special company. Burt said the asbestos will be removed on Thursday.
