Asbestos materials in UK, damaged by winter weather, to be removed from properties
Asbestos-containing materials that were discovered in properties in York, UK, will be removed over the next few months after they were damaged significantly by the severe weather this past winter, the BBC reports.

According to the news provider, the asbestos was discovered during routine maintenance inspections of the properties.

The asbestos removal project is expected to be carried out through July and nearby residents have reportedly been advised to keep their windows closed while the work is performed, according to the news source.

Steve Waddington, assistant director of housing and public protection at City of York Council, explained that regular air tests will continue while the asbestos abatement takes place. He said that no hazardous waste materials will be kept at the properties overnight.

Properly handling and removing loose or damaged asbestos from properties is critical, as the inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can lead to the development of malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Such asbestos-related diseases kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
