Asbestos issue at Scottish pool not as serious as once thought
The discovery of asbestos in the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Scotland did not adversely affect the pool's renovations as much as originally predicted, the Scotsman reports.Last March, the Edinburgh Evening News reported that the asbestos discovery and subsequent removal had caused the renovations to be delayed. At the time, council officials reportedly admitted that they did not know how much the removal would cost or how long it would delay the project.
Since that time, it's become clear that the asbestos work caused the renovation to be pushed back 13 weeks behind schedule, but the cost is still unknown, according to the Scotsman.
In a report published recently, council officials explained that "the asbestos problem did not prove as serious as first thought."
Initially, it was estimated that the renovations of the pool would be completed by the end of June 2011 and that they would cost a total of £37 million, according to the news source.
Asbestos exposure has been proven to cause a range of serious illnesses including malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
