Asbestos illegally dumped in Wales community
A community in Wales has witnessed a significant amount of illegal asbestos dumping over the past few weeks. The South Wales Evening Post reports that the fly-tippers - a British term for illegal dumpers - dumped not only the naturally occurring carcinogen but empty chemical containers in the Swansea community as well.
Local resident Gordon Phillips explained the extent of the problem to the news source.
"Over the past three weeks the same person or persons have dumped four full lorry loads of building waste which contains not only asbestos but containers that have had or still contain chemicals from what can be seen on the labels; if children get to this material and start playing amongst it there could be very serious consequences," he told the Post.
The Swansea Council had the asbestos taken away but only after asbestos-handling specialists were brought in. Such workers are needed to remove asbestos as they are equipped and trained to ensure that they do not inhale the deadly mineral fibers. If such inhalation occurs, asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma can result.
