Asbestos News

Asbestos illegally dumped in England
A truckload of commercial waste that reportedly contained asbestos was illegally dumped recently on a small village road in Great Bentley, England, according to the Clacton Gazette.

The news source reports the large pile of waste contained a substantial amount of asbestos, a set of naturally occurring mineral fibers that can have devastating health consequences for those who are exposed to it.

Such consequences can include the development of lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a cancer that claims the life of one person every five hours in Britain, according to the newspaper The Mirror. All told, asbestos-related illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, estimates the World Health Organization.

Nick Turner, the cabinet member for the environment on the local Tendring Council, told the news source that because of the asbestos, the pile of waste needed to be removed by a hired contractor, which cost up to £1,000.

The waste pile reportedly contained roofing materials and carpet, meaning it could have come from a demolition or renovation project, the news source said.
