Asbestos found during restoration of UK pipe organ
Asbestos was used in many different ways for many years and as a result it can be found in a number of places, including pipe organs.Such was the case of the Berwick Parish Church in the UK where blue asbestos was found in the pipe organ, according to the Berwick Advertiser.
The discovery of the naturally occurring mineral was made by workers at the beginning of the year when they began to undertake restoration work on the instrument.
Following the initial discovery, a specialist was brought in to confirm the find and then asbestos abatement workers were brought in to remove the substance, according to the Advertiser.
The news source reports that some of the pipe organs were lagged with asbestos to protect them from heat damage. This was a common use for asbestos, which was also commonly utilized as an insulator. However, by the mid-1960s it became known that exposure to the material could cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
According to the news provider, the original restoration work on the pipe organ was slated to cost £160,000.
