Asbestos found at old baths in UK
Asbestos was recently found in an old bath/swimming facility in the UK.The naturally occurring mineral was discovered at the Elvet Baths in Durham, according to the Northern Echo.
The news source reports that the facility has been scheduled to be demolished but it lost its funding due to the recession. It was later hoped that the baths could be preserved for some sort of future use, but it has since become dilapidated and a target of vandals.
Making the situation worse was the discovery of asbestos, a hazardous material that can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
Town development manager Chris Myers said that the asbestos would be removed to make the site more attractive to potential developers.
"We remain committed to attracting the right sort of development for the area and are doing this work firstly in the interests of public safety but also in the hope it will make the site more attractive in a difficult financial climate," he told the news source.
The baths were first opened in 1932.
