Asbestos firm in India claims it is unfairly targeted by protesters
A firm in India that is planning to open up an asbestos manufacturing plant said it was upset because it feels it is being unfairly targeted by protesters.Balmukund Sponge & Iron (BSI) Limited is planning to start an asbestos sheet manufacturing plant, according to the Times of India.
BSI has reportedly received approval to build the facility from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) but is facing protests from the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), a political party.
"Besides us, two other firms have got the CPCB go-ahead to set up asbestos plants in Bihar. Yet another company is in the process of obtaining this clearance. Interestingly, SUCI has a problem with only us," BSI director Abhishek Kanodia told the news source.
Kanodia also claimed that fears over the health risks of asbestos are unfounded.
However, since the 1960s it has been known that asbestos exposure can cause a range of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
The World Health Organization estimates that 107,000 people are killed each year worldwide from asbestos-related diseases.
