Asbestos find delays work on NSW police station
An asbestos discovery at a police station in the Australian state of New South Wales has caused work on the structure to be delayed.According to the Port Stephens Examiner, the Nelson Bay police building has an old foundation and builders working on it found asbestos buried in the area.
The find has not allowed officers to carry out their typical operations and they have had to work from a mobile unit for a period of time.
Police association representative Ian Allwood told the news source that no one has been exposed to asbestos but the work will not be completed on the station's $850,000 upgrade until 2012.
"[The station] is still operational and the asbestos has been removed in accordance with workplace regulations," he said. "As [the builders] move through parts of the building there will be more to clean up. We will see some disruptions over the next three months."
Making sure that asbestos is properly handled whenever it is discovered is essential as exposure to the naturally occurring substance can cause a number of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma.
