Asbestos find delays work at Australian site
Renovation work at a building in Australia has been delayed after asbestos was found to be present.

City of Perth acting chief executive Doug Forster said that most of the naturally occurring substance found at the Goderich Street site was in the form of sheeting, according to the Guardian Express.

Forster said that the substance is in a form that is not likely to pose a health risk to the public but added that authorities would ensure that the substance was properly abated from the site.

"However, the City believes that the most important issue at this time is to address the presence of asbestos and ensure the safety of the community, both now and in the longer term," he told the news source.

When asbestos is found in older buildings - as it often is - it is important that it is removed, handled and disposed of properly as exposure to the naturally occurring substance can cause a number of serious illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma.

Forster said that the removal work would include taking the substance to a disposal facility properly licensed to handle asbestos.
