Asbestos find delays renovation work at UK high school
Renovations at a high school in the UK have been set back by the discovery of asbestos on the site. The asbestos was found at Caldervale High School and is being removed by workers, according to the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser.
"Progress has been delayed by the unanticipated discovery of asbestos under the ground floor of the main teaching block," a report presented to local authorities stated. "It is being removed by a specialist contractor in line with Health and Safety Executive guidance; costs are projected at up to £850,000 but this could increase if further ground contamination is discovered."
While it can be frustrating to encounter a setback in renovation work, it is vital that asbestos is thoroughly and properly removed from places where improvement work is going on as such projects can disturb the naturally occurring mineral. The inhalation of these asbestos fibers can have a number of serious consequences such as the development of malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
According to the news source, some of the improvements at the school, including a number of sports fields, should be completed by October 2013.
