Asbestos find delays Australian library project
The redevelopment of a library in the Australian state of New South Wales has been delayed after asbestos was discovered at the site. The Bay Post reports that the completion of the Batemans Bay Library and Education Centre project has been delayed about a month.
According to Eurobodalla Shire Council director Peter McLaughlin, cement that is contaminated with an asbestos product was found during excavation.
McLaughlin said that a specialist was brought in to handle the asbestos.
"It is non friable, which means it is not in a form that is likely to become airborne," he told the news source.
Non friable asbestos means that the material can not be pulverized with one's hand, making it more difficult for the mineral fibers to be released. However, asbestos in all forms poses serious health risks as the inhalation of the fibers can cause a range of deadly illnesses such as lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer that attacks the thin membrane that lines the chest, abdomen and many of the body's internal organs.
