Asbestos dumped near school in the UK
Residents of Hornsey, United Kingdom were shocked when they recently found asbestos covered corrugated metal illegally dumped, or "fly tipped," near a children's park and school, according to the Hornsey, Crouch End and Muswell Hill Journal. This find is especially serious as asbestos exposure is known to cause lung cancer, asbestosis, and malignant mesothelioma. According to the EPA, it can be found in roofing, tiling and pipeline and no one should be exposed to it, especially children.
"Fly tipping of any kind is completely unacceptable and this kind of material can pose a danger to passers by. We will not hesitate to take enforcement action against anyone caught dumping in the borough," said an area councilwoman to the news source.
The dumpers left the metal and a posted and sign next to it on a paper plate that read "Asbestos Do Not Touch." People in the area were disgusted with the act and called it irresponsible, according to the news source. The town council assigned their waste contractors to remove it as soon it was reported, but citizens claim that it stayed there for at least one more day after its discovery.
