Asbestos dumped near housing estate in Ireland
A large quantity of asbestos was recently dumped near a residential structure in Ireland.Tons of the carcinogenic material were dumped at Townspark Ardee over Christmas, according to the Dundalk Democrat.
Tony Lynch, the owner of the housing estate where the dumping took place, said that the perpetrators cut the locks on the gate and dumped what Lynch said appeared to be the remains of an old shed.
Lynch also expressed worry over the health hazard posed by asbestos, a harmful material that can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
"My main concern is health and safety," the property owner told the news source. "There are children nearby at Ferdia Park. I don't want to see them near it."
The illegal dumping of asbestos has plagued other towns in the area, according to the news provider. In fact, the issue has gotten so bad that the Churchtown and District Community Alert Group was formed to resolve the issue.
"We want to eradicate all illegal dumping and make property and homes more secure," group chairman Terry Miles told the Democrat. "We want everybody, especially the elderly [to] feel secure in our community and build on the great community spirit in the area."
