Asbestos dumped in front of elderly UK woman's home
Dangerous asbestos-containing materials have reportedly been illegally dumped outside of the home of an 80-year-old UK woman who claims it is not the first time such an incident has occurred.According to the Swindon Advertiser, Deborah Webb of Purton claims the latest dumping involved rotting roof tiles, with sofas and other types of furniture having been left behind previously.
Webb, a former farmer who now lives with her grandson, told the news source that she was not happy with the regular asbestos dumping on her property.
"Someone has come along overnight and dumped sheets of asbestos on my drive. It looks like a whole roof," Webb explained. "I’m fed up with it. I’ve lived here 53 years and this has gone on for years. I’ve had three-piece suites, furniture and glass bottles thrown in the field."
The illegal dumping of asbestos-containing materials can pose a number of health risks to local citizens, as the inhalation of the carcinogenic mineral fibers can cause lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Such illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
