Asbestos News

Asbestos discovery could force massive renovations at UK hospital
The renovation of Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey, UK, which was halted earlier this year due to the discovery of asbestos, could include more substantial renovations after other problems were discovered.

According to the BBC, the Health and Social Services Department decided that the massive overhaul could be necessary after asbestos was removed from the hospital's Ozanne Ward in March.

After the carcinogenic material was removed from the facility, a number of other issues were discovered in the hospital, including substandard electrics, the news source said.

The department said that while the extensive renovations would likely be expensive, the work could be essential in better meeting the needs of patients.

Ensuring that all asbestos is properly removed from buildings and disposed of is critical as exposure to the carcinogen has been proven to cause deadly diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding many of the body's internal organs.

Such diseases claim the lives of approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
