Asbestos News

Asbestos discovered in basement of UK social center
Asbestos has been found at a social center in Marylebone, UK, but the facility has reportedly been deemed safe for visitors, according to the Westminster Chronicle.

The news source reports that patrons of the Seymour Leisure Centre began to express their concerns after hearing that asbestos was discovered in the basement of the building in June. One visitor, whose name was not disclosed by the news source, explained that the fact that asbestos is still an issue three months later is alarming.

"The center management promised users that the asbestos would be resolved within four weeks," the visitor told the Chronicle. "Now after three months, no action has yet been taken and I am becoming concerned for my health and safety as on ongoing user of the center."

Concerns about asbestos arise due to the fact that since the mid-1960s, it has been proven that exposure to the carcinogenic substance can cause lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer.

Despite these potential risks, Westminster Council's deputy head of sport and leisure, Steve Summers, told the news source that the asbestos has been contained and the building is still safe for use.
