Asbestos discovered in South Korean baseball park soil
Health concerns are mounting in South Korea after asbestos was reportedly discovered in soil at a local baseball park, meaning both fans and players could have been exposed to the carcinogenic substance.According to the Korea Times, the Asian Citizen's Center for Environment and Health said it discovered the asbestos at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul in addition to four other parks around the country.
The environmental group reportedly demanded that games be stopped due to the potential health risks involving spectators, players and umpires, the news source said.
"The detection at the ballparks means players and coaches of the eight professional teams, umpires, facility management staff and spectators have been exposed to the cancer-causing material, while more than 6 million spectators have enjoyed baseball games this year alone," said Choe Ye-yong, the group's director, according to the news source.
According to the World Health Organization, asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year.
