Asbestos discovered at UK college
Asbestos was recently found on the campus of a college in the UK.According to the Lynn News, Lynn's College of West Anglia may have to close its main building to carry out asbestos abatement work.
School spokesman Paul O'Shea said that access to the areas where the naturally occurring carcinogen was found has been restricted.
"The areas which contain asbestos are not accessible to students and the college is now working closely with the [Health and Safety Executive] and a specialist company to plan for the safe removal of the asbestos in the Tower Block," he told the news source."This work is likely to start at the end of the current academic year and our current understanding is that it will take several weeks to complete."
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain's federal workplace safety agency.
It is vital that asbestos is properly handled and removed from buildings in which it is discovered as exposure to the substance has been proven to cause a number of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
