Asbestos delays Canadian hospital razing
A hospital in the Canadian maritime province of Nova Scotia won't be demolished until next year after asbestos concerns held up the razing.Asbestos was found at an old nurses residence at the Aberdeen Professional Centre. According to the NG News, the razing of the facility is part of a multi-year plan to revitalize the site.
Marinus Verhagen, who owns Marinus Verhagen Enterprises, told the news provider that crews are currently removing asbesetos from the facility and that it will be a number of months before the entire demolition project is complete.
"It won’t be until the first of the new year," he said. "There is quite a bit of asbestos in there."
While delays of this nature can be frustrating, proper asbestos removal is essential, especially prior to a building being torn down. Demolition can easily allow asbestos fibers to become airborne and spread throughout an area.
If these fibers are inhaled, they can cause a number of serious illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer that attacks the thin membrane that lines the abdomen, chest and many of the body's internal organs.
