Asbestos complicates renovation of New York town hall
The renovation of the Woodstock, New York town hall building will reportedly cost approximately $14,000 more than initially expected due to additional asbestos abatement work, the Kingston Daily Freeman reports.According to the news source, the town board agreed to the additional sum during a meeting after they were told that there was 20 to 25 percent more asbestos in the building than previously indicated.
"They (Nurzia Construction) based their bid on a report by Alpine Environmental Services that was done in 2007," town supervisor Jeremy Wilber told the news source. "After they made their bid and it was accepted we found that because there were more sensitive detecting devices and because we had expanded the area, that we needed another survey. Alpine came back and they found more asbestos."
Wilber explained that original asbestos removal estimates neared $46,000, and the additional money will pay for removal, air monitoring and inspections following the work, according to the Daily Freeman.
Such precautions when it comes to handling asbestos is critical, as exposure to the carcinogenic substance can lead to the development of lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis.
