Asbestos at Scottish pool facility increases renovation costs
During renovation work at a Scottish swimming pool, deteriorating asbestos ceiling tiles were discovered, sending the cost of the refurbishment work 67 percent over budget. The BBC reports that £60,000 had originally been allotted to the work at the Castle Douglas facility in southwest Scotland to fill in some leaks in the pool. However, once the asbestos tiles were discovered, it was determined that they needed to be dealt with, putting the cost for all the work at around £100,000.
Despite the costs associated with asbestos abatement work, it is vital to have it completed as exposure to the naturally occurring mineral can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the thin lining of the chest, abdomen and many internal organs.
The pool facility was shut down in September and was originally only supposed to be closed for three weeks, but the asbestos find and various issues with the contractors brought on to perform the work kept the doors shuttered on the facility until the end of January, according to the news source.
