Asbestos and other waste illegally dumped in Australia parks
Rangers at Parks Victoria in Australia recently found a significant amount of asbestos that had been illegally dumped at Gormandale Flora Reserve and Moondarra State Park, the Latrobe Valley Express reports.Andy Gillham, head of the Parks Victoria rangers, said that the asbestos that had been dumped posed a significant health risk for employees, maintenance crews, firefighters and local residents.
"We were surprised at such a careless attitude to dump a lethal product such as asbestos into the public reserves and this matter is now being investigated by the Victoria Police," Gillham told the news provider.
Gillham added that 30 cubic meters of asbestos was removed from Gormandale and that another 15 cubic meters was taken from Moondarra.
Parks Victoria is reminding visitors that dumping asbestos and other waste materials in such reserves is illegal and that penalties will be assessed to violators, the news source said.
Exposure to asbestos can cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding many of the body's internal organs.
