Asbestos abatement at Colorado city market to begin in January
According to the Aspen Daily News, the asbestos discovered in the Aspen, Colorado City Market will most likely not cause the store to close in January, when the material is scheduled to be contained.Since the renovations on the city market began, asbestos has been discovered in three places, according to Christopher Dan, a spokesman for Colorado Air Pollution Control.
"What we know right now is that apparently there is some additional asbestos abatement work planned for early January," said Dan, who has spoken with the abatement contractor. "Apparently when that will be done, they will not have to close the store, and they will be able to establish containment to prevent any exposure to the customers."
Dan told the news provider that the contractor estimates asbestos exists in approximately 8,000 square feet of ceiling that is situated above a dropped ceiling. According to Kelli McGannon, a spokesperson for the grocery store, all contractors and store associates have received training on asbestos awareness since the third discovery was made.
It is important that asbestos is properly removed from the building as inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can cause malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
