Additional asbestos discovered at former UK college
The demolition of the last remaining building that was part of the former Tresham College in Kettering, UK, has been delayed after work crews reportedly discovered more asbestos than originally expected.According to the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, the demolition of the structure - which has reportedly been damaged by vandals over the year and is seen as an eyesore - will begin in two weeks, once the asbestos is cleared.
Andy Seeds, the site manager, told the news source that the majority of the work has gone as scheduled up to this point.
"It has gone well considering the amount of asbestos that was in the college which we knew about," he said. "I would say we are 80 percent done."
The asbestos removal work is of paramount importance as the dangerous mineral fibers can become airborne when loosened. The inhalation of such fibers has been proven to cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma.
According to the news source, the demolition of the building is expected to pave the way for the creation of 59 retirement homes and 48 private houses.
